SIR - I was encouraged by your comment (Worcester News, October 17) in which you stated that the police had "got it wrong" when they moved protesters using a table without permission. It is unusual to read criticism of the police in your columns.

Like this incident, there are, apparently, plenty of examples of police use of discretion in ways which anger sections of communities, and do much to create distrust and resentment. The reported plan for police to steal' unlocked bicycles from Worcester city centre to encourage owners to lock them seemed a ludicrous example of how not to win friends and influence people positively.

Unfortunately, in recent years, there has been a considerable widening of police powers.

It appears that when these powers are misused, there is little or no redress or accountability.

The killing of the Brazilian in London was just one example.

It is easy to take action in Worcester against the protesters, yet the former Prime Minister appears immune from any action against him for what many regard as war crimes.

COLIN ARCHER, Worcester.
