A POIGNANT service to remember those who fought in a famous World War One battle will take place in a Worcester park.

Dignitaries, councillors, and residents will gather in Cripplegate Park to remember the World War One battles of Oghratina and Qatia.

The battle of Oghratina and Qatia took place in 1916, and a small force was attacked in the early hours of Easter Sunday.

A detachment of Yeomanry was ordered to guard a small party of Royal Engineers tasked with digging wells at Oghratina, east of the Suez Canal.

This small force was attacked by over 3,000 Turkish soldiers on April 23 1916, and the men were soon overrun.

The victorious enemy then charged the main body of Yeomanry based at Qatia.

To mark the battle, there is a Yeomanry Memorial in Cripplelgate Park, which is now known as Yeomanry Park.

The annual service will take place on Saturday, April 20, at 11.30am at the Poppy Memorial.

A short outdoor remembrance service and a wreath-laying ceremony will remember those who died in the Worcestershire Yeomanry.
